MY TOP FIVE JEWELRY ANIMALS
What can I say? I love animals and I love jewelry. Put those together, and you’ve got a winning combination. Whenever I start taking myself too seriously, I just put on cute little kitten necklace or an adorable fly brooch, and I look in the mirror and smile. So here are my five favorite animals to wear and show off.
In fact, animals have been the subject of jewelry for tens of thousands of years. Recently, archeologists in Africa have discovered the earliest known jewelry. They are believed to be about 75,000 years old. While they don’t depict animals, they are made of animals. Mollusk shells, to be specific. The shells actually came from a river a dozen or so miles away, and were deliberately, even artfully arranged as jewelry.
In ancient Egypt, gold animal jewelry appeared around 5,000 B.C., often using various animals (the falcon, cobra, lion, ducks even) to represent gods or levels of status. Famously, Egyptian kings were buried with their animal jewelry, which sounds like a good idea to me. At least those little butterfly earrings my mom gave me for graduation.
Which brings us to my five favorite animals for jewelry.ß
They make me feel like a little girl. What can I say? Butterflies are all about new beginnings and feeling beautiful all over again. And when I wear a butterfly bracelet, it’s Springtime no matter what month it is.
When I’m wearing a lion pendant (I have two!), you’d better watch out. I’m in charge, and I want everybody to know it.
Giraffes are aloof and elegant. And so long and lean. When I want to feel like Audrey Hepburn walking into a ball, I put on my giraffe necklace and hold my head high. They’re also kind of funny and exotic. (Like me!)
These little guys always seem friendly and mystical. There’s something sweet about a frog made of gold. Like something out of a dream or a fairy tale. And there’s always the chance that he’ll turn into a prince.
Coming in at number one is, of course, panthers. For obvious reasons. They’re sexy and ferocious. Graceful and powerful. And they’re cats, which is great. There’s a reason panthers are used so often in jewelry. And guys, if you’re thinking about getting an animal piece for your special lady, you can’t go wrong with a panther. It lets her know that you think she’s sleek and cunning, strong and sexy. And just a little bit ferocious.
So go ahead, let your inner animal run free.
